![]() I've never been a fan of fearing you have to use OEM fluids only. I'm not saying run right out and buy Castrol Transmax universal ATF/CVT fluid, I'm just stating that it works for me and is a viable option. Corporations will not open them selves up to that kind of stupid liability. My personal believe on this topic for years has been, there's no way a name brand product like Castrol is going to state their product is "suitable for use in X" when it in fact is not. I'll post otherwise should anything happen. The CVT has performed flawlessly with this castrol fluid, but it's only been about 300 miles. The fluid color is red, which I don't like, but it's irrelevant now that I'm well beyond a warranty repair. A drain and fill has always worked out to be 4qts for my pathfinder. I went this route as this is all I can find on the shelves of my local Wallmart and it's just over $22 for a 4qt jug. I tried a 4qt jug of Castrol Transmax universal ATF/CVT fluid that is stated as being suitable for use in Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid applications. My 2019 Nissan Pathfinder SV 4x4 recently hit 70K miles and it had been about 15K miles since my last CVT fluid drain/fill using the stock of Nissan OEM NS-3 fluid I had on hand. It doesn't make sense to me why an Ascent owner wouldn't do that service.My plan all along as I've mentioned in many other CVT fluid related posts here has been to swap over to an aftermarket CVT fluid once I was past my 5yr/60K mile warranty. You know what? I can do that service several times before I meet or exceed the cost of a replacement CVT. Say $520 total all-in for fluid service on all three components. The same dealership charges me right at $400 for a transmission fluid drain & fill service (and differential service is an additional $60 per differential). I've never owned a vehicle for which a replacement transmission (including labor, fluid, etc.) cost that much. As it was under warranty, and my repair order copy had no charge indicated everywhere, I asked to look at the internal repair order to see the replacement billing to Subaru of America.$9,400.
